First Time to Williamsburg?
Traditionally Williamsburg, Viriginia is known for its historical reference. Williamsburg offers a glimpse into Colonial life and the people you’ll meet will be in costume and playing a role. Colonial Williamsburg is the nation’s largest living history museum encompassing 301 acres including some 500 buildings, homes, stores and taverns reconstructed and restored to their 18th-century appearances. There are trades people, historical interpreters and character interpreters that will make you feel welcome while educating you at the same time. With so much to explore historically you will want to return to see what else the city has to offer.
Outside Colonial Williamsburg
There are other famous places to visit if history is your thing. Yorktown, about a 20 minute drive away, situated on the York River and famous as it was here that American Independance was won. The British led by Lord Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington. Jamestown tells the story of the people who founded it and of the Virginia Indians that they encountered is told through living history, gallery exhibits, and film.
Something nice to check out also is the Williamsburg Farmer’s Market. Held in Merchant’s Square, this farmer’s market helps continue Williamsburg’s traditional role of being a gathering place for the community as well as a center of regional trade and commerce. It is open from February through October 25, 2008 on Saturdays.
Theme Parks and Other Fun
For the kids, or those that like to act like one, there is Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Only 3 miles from Williamsburg, they are open daily from late May through Labor Day, and weekends from late March through Halloween. This park offers roller coasters such as Big Bad Wolf, water rides like Escape from Pompeii, well known dark rides such as Curse of DarKastle, plus smaller rides, games and restaurants.
New this year is the “Quick Queue” ride reservation system. With the Quick Queue, you get priority access to the most popular roller coasters, rides and show in the park.
Continuing this summer is also the summer concert series. The Summer Nights concert series will take place at Festhaus Park in Busch Gardens. This year’s lineup includes:
Rick Springfield – July 19/20, Grand Funk Railroad – July 26/27, The Charlie Daniels Band – Aug. 2/3, Guess Who – Aug. 9/10, Peter Frampton – Aug. 16/17. Summer Nights concert series events are included with park admission.
Water Country USA is another great way to spend a hot day in Williamsburg. Open daily from May through Labor Day, Water Country USA offers over 10 rides and shows in addition to relaxing under an umbrella! You can even rent a private cabana for the day.
Williamsburg also has a winery. Williamsburg Winery is Virginia’s largest winery with an annual production of some 60,000 cases. The first wine produced, Governor’s White, was released in 1988 and won a Gold Medal within two weeks. Tours of the facility and wine tastings are held daily by professionally trained staff members.
While meant to be taken seriously, Presidents Park looms like a patriotic Easter Island, containing the larger-than-life likenesses of all 43 presidents, most measuring 16-18 feet high! Signs give you lots of info on their accomplishments, nicknames, and just about everything else. It is open 10-8 daily from April thru August, 10-4 the rest of the year and on the way to Busch Gardens.
